Visible and Physical Barriers |
|
This is an effective and humane way to keep prairie dogs in an allocated area and to discourage continued expansion of a colony in a certain direction. The product that we most recommend is the Griffolyn® Prairie Dog Barriers from Reef Industries. “Griffolyn® Prairie Dog Barriers can isolate prairie dogs from your property or municipality. Using this safe, humane product helps your property stay private, while not harming prairie dogs.” Alternative barrier materials are hardware cloth or silt fencing. The latter, although easy to use, is a temporary solution. It is important that you plant your barrier at least 18-24 inches below the surface of the ground to prevent the prairie dogs from digging under it. Above the ground, the barrier must be high enough that the animals cannot see over it. Allow for at least 30-36 inches. If possible, you may wish to reinforce your barrier with chicken wire. If the prairie dogs do manage to chew through a fabric, the wire will prevent them from breaking through to the other side. Planting tall vegetation along the barrier will further enhance its effectiveness and appearance. |
